Thoughts on Prayer

Years of Minutes

More from Years of Minutes on Promise Keepers and prayer from Andy Rooney:

I watched some of the Promise Keepers praying on television and Im puzzled about prayer.

Isnt it sort of insulting to suggest God doesnt know what we want until we tell him?

And they praise God as if they thought he liked being flattered.

It seems wrong to me for anyone to think that if they pray, theyll get a lot of good stuff from God that the ones who dont pray wont get.

People are always asking God for special treatment. You see football players praying or thanking God after theyve scored a touchdown. What about those poor guys who lost? They didnt pray?

Bill McCartney, the founder of Promise Keepers, even asked his followers to prostrate themselves while they prayed in order to get God’s attention. God must have had a good laugh over that.

I always think politicians have a nerve ending their speeches by telling God what to do. Their order is “God Bless America!”

It should be “Please God, bless America.”

“By the way, God. While youre at it, would you please bless some of the countries that dont have it as good as we do?”
