Grandma’s Rules

Warren Buffet’s granddaughter, Nicole, sat for an interview with NPR where she said that her grandmother gave all the children and grandchildren a list of rules to live by. They are simple yet profound. I’ve put the rules in bold with my comments afterwards.
- ALWAYS SHOW UP You can’t be in the right place at the right time you you aren’t there at all.
- DO YOUR BEST It is all anybody (including yourself) can ask for and when you do your best it is well appreciated.
- TELL THE TRUTH It is easier to keep track of and it will serve you well in the long run.
- ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES Take responsibility and learn what to do next time.
- DON’T BE ATTACHED TO RESULTS Sometimes you don’t end up where you intended to, but it seems like it was where you were supposed to be all along. Sometimes a wrong turn leads to a spectacular view you would have missed otherwise.
I am reminded of something I read on Stephen Shapiro’s blog:
I am fascinated by the mind’s incredible power. And this power sometimes causes you miss things that are right in front of your nose.
In the secret, “Remember that Opportunity Knocks Often, Just Sometimes Softly,” I talk about how the brain filters 99.9% of the stimuli around you. This is important because it allows you to focus.
However, what you focus on expands, to the exclusion of all else. You see what you “want” to see, but miss everything else.
I’m not discounting the possibility of people with psychic abilities. However, this article provides compelling evidence that our minds can be easily manipulated. People see what they want to see, and miss everything else.
When you are blindly focused on your future goals, you often miss opportunities that are around you. You are unwittingly blinded and unknowingly misdirected.
When you are “present and conscious” of your immediate surroundings, you may find bigger and better opportunities.

I love the rules to live by, they are GREAT! I espcially like what you said about doing your best. I know I am not perfect, but there is a huge sense of pride knowing that I have given something my all.

I keep telling my boss I am all about “failure” based on what I’ve been writing lately. It keeps me loose and easy. By the way, I love my job! Last week I was number 1 and I am ahead so far this week too. I love our clients and the people I work with.
Look what I wrote years ago when I was doing the What Color Is Your Parachute book:
I work with people who inform, enlighten, train, influence, persuade, observe and learn. I work with personal development, teaching, books, computers, success, goals, balance and time management. I work in a clean and inviting environment that has a flexible schedule, empowerment, excellent communication, and supberb customer relations.
