You Are an Atheist

One of the most common questions that theists ask nontheists (or atheists) is “Why don’t you believe in God?”. Their answer is that they do not see any valid reason for holding such a belief.

In order to rationally believe any claim, one must first have credible evidence. I am coming to believe that there is, however, no credible evidence for the existence of a god. Feelings don’t count, experiences don’t count, the Bible doesn’t count, what the pastor says doesn’t count. I say they don’t count because every religion makes the same claims. Which one is right? “Will the real religion please stand up?” What counts is viable proof. When God works 100% of the time without excuses like it is not his will, and God’s ways are not our ways, and God works in mysterious ways, then I will take another look.

Nontheists don’t believe in god(s) for the same reason that theists don’t believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny or the gods of other religions. Stephen Roberts explained the difference between theists and atheists as follows:

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Thomas Jefferson said:

Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.” - Thomas Jefferson
