Experiment

There are many different ways to journal.

Experiment with journaling longhand on beautiful paper, on a
keyboard, at different times of the day, in different locations, and for varying lengths of time.

Many people find that doing “morning pages” upon first rising, and “evening reflections” at the end of the day are very effective and yield very different results.

I know a man who has an interesting technique. He journals about what he wants to accomplish for the day in the areas that he is working on in the morning. Then at night, he revisits those thoughts and journals on how well he did.

I have done longhand journals and computer journals. I like them both for different reasons, but I find the most beneficial for me is to write out my journal longhand in a notebook, first thing in the morning. If I have something come up for me in the day that I just can’t seem to get a hold of, I will reach for my journal and get it all out, no matter what the time of day.

This spring and summer I spent lots of time at the Des Moines Marina with my journal. It was nice to be away from home and out in nature, alone with my thoughts. Later on I would transfer some of my thoughts to my blog about my journey through Jack Canfield’s Success Principles. So you see, I did some of each.

Do what ever works for you. Try some different times of day and different writing methods and never be afraid to change whenever the mood strikes.
