Faith or Science

Atheist Revolution has pointed out an excellent post titled Faith Hospital by Alonzo Fyfe at Atheist Ethicist a little bit ago.
To look at the potential conflict between religion and science, Alonzo imagines two hospitals: One hospital is the Institute for Scientific Medicine which is scientifically-based, and its cross-town rival is Faith Hospital which relies on scripture and prayer rather than science. Hop on overand read this thought-provoking article and then ask yourself if you were facing a life-threatening disease would you go to Faith Hospital or Scientific Medicine.
Or imagine if a close family member had to undergo complicated brain surgery. Your choices are the best brain surgeon in the world who is an atheist or a recent med school graduate who is a Christian. I bet most people (even Christians) would choose experience over faith. They don’t like atheists but when it comes to living or dying you can bet that they will ask an atheist to save their lives before they would rely on their God. Of course most Christians I know will just say that God sent them the best surgeon in the world due to their fait and prayers.
It seems like you can’t win. If they can’t explain it away, they just chalk it up to God’s mysterious ways, God’s will not mine, His ways are not our ways, etc. There is no arguing with that kind of “logic.” Most of the time I don’t even try; all you end up doing is going around and around in circles. And then it comes down to personal experience - I can’t deny their personal experience. The thing is, though, I had all of those experiences too. But I guess mine weren’t “real” like theirs are.
More on mystical and personal experiences soon.
