Deep-Rooted Beliefs

In reference to the post Making Your Own Choices I thought of a good example:

At one time my mom was married to Neal. Neal was raised by a very bigoted family. When my sister announced she was going to marry a black man Neal had a fit. He told my mom that they wouldn’t be allowed in the house. My mom told him that they were more than welcome anytime and if he didn’t like it, he could leave when they were there.

As time passed (and a grandbaby came along) Neal softened up and eventually became friends with Steve. It turns out he had never even met a black person before. He had avoided them at all costs because of his birth families belief that blacks were bad.

When you feel strongly about something, take the time to examine your beliefs. Is it your own belief or is it one passed down from generation to generation? Even if you keep the belief or opinion, you will know it is your own choice.

From my journal:

I am growing intellectually. I listen with an open mind and take in what I think may enhance my world. I read things pertaining to all aspects of my life and internalize worthwhile things. I learn what works and apply it to my life. I learn everything I can that will enhance my ability to do better at whatever I undertake.
